You will be trained to:
Produce production welds using different welding methods such as MIG, TIG and MMA
Working in a challenging and rewarding industry in support of construction within the workshop / construction site
Supporting fabricators in the production of platforms, stairways and supporting structures as well as pipe fitters, producing pipework for the transfer of fluids
As an integral part of your apprenticeship your progress will be monitored and assessed against the Apprenticeship requirements. You will compile an evidence folder, demonstrating your areas of learning with accredited certificates of completion for elements of your training.
You will undertake knowledge, skills and behaviour assessments where you will be expected to clearly demonstrate your capability to perform as a Welder Apprentice.Training:This is a four-year scheme where the first year will be spent learning a range of hands-on engineering skills.
1st Year - training is delivered at our of-site training facility.
2nd, 3rd & 4th Years – Site placements in central workshops at Sellafield.

You will be carrying out detailed visual inspections.
Making detailed records and giving technical feedback.
Developing the confidence to challenge/question specifications throughout the manufacturing process.
You will become trained in other techniques such as liquid penetrant and magnetic particle testing to detect surface breaking defects or you may also get the chance to do volumetric testing such as; Radiography and Ultra Sonic testing, which allows you to detect defects inside the weld. You will need to have the right attitude to health and safety, quality and following instructions.
The scheme will cover:
Material science
Welding technology/welding inspection
Non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques
Training:You will have the opportunity to work towards a Level 4 Apprenticeship certificate, during this time you will work alongside existing welding inspectors at Sellafield Ltd and attend college one day per week.
1st Year – Training will be delivered at a local off-site training facility. You will learn basic hand, trade skills, welding techniques, reading engineering/fabrication drawings, taking measurements and a basic introduction into welding inspection.
2nd, 3rd and 4th Year – You will be placed in the welding inspection team on site/off site and in the supply chain learning about welding inspection, material defects and NDT techniques, i.e. Dye Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, Radiography and Ultrasonic Testing. We also carry out inspections off site as well which means we have to inspect manufactured items/equipment that our suppliers have made in their workshops to check it meets the required standard.
As an integral part of your apprenticeship your progress will be monitored and assessed against government standard requirements. You will compile an evidence folder, demonstrating your areas of learning with accredited certificates of completion for elements of your training. Within the last six months of your apprenticeship you will undertake an assessment by an independently appointed organisation, where you will be expected to clearly demonstrate your capability to perform as a Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician.
What qualifications will I obtain?
ST0292 Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician Apprenticeship
Level 4 BTEC Higher National Certificate.
Level 2 Welding Inspection qualification, which allows the NWIT to deploy and supervise welding inspection.
Level 2 certification in two NDT techniques
Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) NVQ Level 2 in Welding
Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Operations and Maintenance (3 units only)
BTEC HNC in Engineering Manufacture

At Sellafield the Firefighters role also provides the site with ambulance and emergency medical response and various resilience and flood mitigation equipment
You will need to maintain a smart appearance, wear uniform, fire kit and other personal protective equipment, as well as respiratory protective equipment such as self-contained breathing apparatus, necessary for work in hazardous areas and requiring the operators to be clean shaven
In this role you will be quite often working outside in all weather conditions, at heights, in confined spaces and in nuclear facilities with alpha, beta, gamma and neutron radiation
This role provides an exciting opportunity to explore and experience various aspects of the sites and provides great plant-based experience.Training:Your initial training (acquisition of skills) will provide you with a range of practical basic firefighting and theoretical skills; these will be rigorously tested over an extended period of time to elevate you to a competent level (demonstration of skills).
Once competent in role you will move into maintenance of skills training to ensure that your acquired skills are maintained to the highest of operationally effective standards at all times.

You will be following documented instructions for nearly all aspects of work
You will typically be working in teams of ten to twelve colleagues from diverse backgrounds. The roles are physically demanding and do require you to wear personal protective equipment and respiratory equipment (such as full PVC suit, gloves and respirators) whilst working in a range of conditions i.e. hot, cold and or in confined spaces
Training:First 6 months – Sellafield based apprentices: Training is delivered at our local off-site training facility.
Last 18 months – Start Sellafield Skills Centre on a pre-site ready programme then placed in operating units throughout the business to continue your training and apprenticeship. You will be continually monitored and assessed during your training.
