Quantity Surveyor – Highways & Civil Engineering
Location: East & LondonSalary: £50,000 – £70,000 + PackageJob Type: PermanentSector: Highways | Surfacing | Civil Engineering
Are you a Quantity Surveyor who understands the commercial realities of delivering highways, surfacing or civil engineering projects?
We're recruiting for an established highways and civil engineering contractor in the South East that is looking to strengthen its commercial team with an experienced Quantity Surveyor.
This isn't a role buried behind spreadsheets.
You'll work closely with the operational and senior management teams, taking commercial responsibility across live projects and ensuring works are properly valued, variations are captured, costs remain controlled and projects deliver the margins expected.
The business operates across highways, surfacing and associated civil engineering works, so we're particularly interested in Quantity Surveyors who understand fast-moving, operational contracting environments rather than purely traditional building construction.
The Role
As Quantity Surveyor, you'll take responsibility for the commercial management of projects from initial handover through delivery and final account.
You'll be involved in:
Managing the commercial performance of highways and civil engineering projects.
Preparing valuations, applications for payment and cost reports.
Identifying, pricing and managing variations and compensation events.
Monitoring project costs, forecasts, margins and cash flow.
Managing subcontractor procurement, accounts and payments.
Reviewing contracts and identifying commercial risks and opportunities.
Working closely with Contracts Managers, Project Managers and operational teams.
Ensuring completed works are accurately measured and commercially recovered.
Supporting tender handovers and reviewing project budgets.
Managing contractual correspondence and maintaining appropriate commercial records.
Negotiating and agreeing final accounts.
Providing clear commercial information to senior management throughout project delivery.
What We're Looking For
We're interested in speaking with Quantity Surveyors from backgrounds including:
Highways | Surfacing | Road Construction | Civil Engineering | Infrastructure | Groundworks | Utilities | S278 Works | Public Realm | Term Maintenance
You'll ideally bring:
Previous Quantity Surveying experience within civil engineering or infrastructure.
Strong commercial awareness and understanding of project profitability.
Experience managing valuations, variations and final accounts.
Knowledge of subcontractor procurement and commercial management.
Experience working with NEC contracts would be particularly valuable.
Confidence working directly with operational teams and clients.
Strong negotiation and communication skills.
The ability to manage multiple projects and competing commercial priorities.
A practical understanding of how works are actually delivered on site.
Formal Quantity Surveying qualifications are advantageous, but relevant highways/civils commercial experience is more important than having the perfect academic background.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to join an established regional contractor where you'll have genuine visibility and influence over project performance.
Rather than becoming another number within a huge commercial department, you'll work closely with the people actually running and delivering the projects.
The role offers:
£50,000 – £70,000 salary depending on experience
Competitive benefits package
Long-term permanent opportunity
Established South East project portfolio
Significant commercial responsibility
Direct exposure to senior management
Opportunity to develop as the business continues to grow
Interested?
If you're currently working within highways, surfacing or civil engineering and want a commercial role where you can genuinely influence how projects perform, we'd like to hear from you.
Apply confidentially and we'll provide further information on the business, projects and opportunity before your details are shared with the client.....Read more...

Are you a Health & Safety Advisor who prefers being out on site, working with operational teams and actually improving safety rather than spending the entire week behind a desk?
We are recruiting for a hands-on H&S Advisor / Site Inspector to join an established highways and civil engineering contractor operating across the South East.
This is a practical, site-focused position where you'll work closely with operational teams across live highways and construction projects, carrying out inspections, identifying risks, investigating incidents and helping ensure excellent safety standards are maintained as the business continues to grow.
The company has achieved zero RIDDOR incidents and zero LTIs over the past three years, so you'll be joining an organisation where Health & Safety is already taken seriously. The challenge is to maintain those standards while continuing to improve how safety is managed on site.
What you'll be doing
As Health & Safety Advisor, you'll be responsible for:
Carrying out regular site inspections and safety audits across highways and civil engineering projects
Working directly with site teams, supervisors and management to improve working practices

What we're looking for

You'll need:
NEBOSH General Certificate – essential
Previous Health & Safety experience within a site-based environment
Experience within highways, civil engineering, construction, utilities, groundworks or infrastructure
Experience carrying out site inspections or audits
Knowledge of incident investigation and reporting
Good understanding of RAMS and safe working practices
Strong communication and influencing skills
Confidence challenging unsafe behaviour constructively
A practical, solutions-focused approach to Health & Safety
Full UK driving licence
Experience within highways, road surfacing, asphalt, streetworks or National Highways environments would be particularly advantageous.
Candidates who are currently working towards their NEBOSH Diploma are encouraged to apply. The business is also prepared to support further professional development.
Who could this role suit?
You may currently be working as a:
Health & Safety Advisor | H&S Advisor | SHEQ Advisor | HSEQ Advisor | SHE Advisor | Site Safety Advisor | Health & Safety Inspector | Site Inspector
We would also be interested in speaking with experienced highways or civil engineering professionals who have moved towards Health & Safety and hold the relevant NEBOSH qualification.
What's on offer?
£30,000 – £40,000, depending on experience
Company vehicle where applicable
Health plan
Pension scheme
Funded support towards further NEBOSH development
Exposure to highways and infrastructure projects
Flexible working arrangements
Paid half-day Fridays
Long-term career development within an established contractor
This isn't a role for someone who wants Health & Safety to exist purely through policies and spreadsheets.
We're looking for someone who enjoys being out with the teams, understanding how work is being delivered, spotting problems before they become incidents and helping people find safer ways of getting the job done.
If you have a NEBOSH qualification and experience within highways, civils, construction or another relevant site-based environment, apply today or get in touch for a confidential discussion.
