We are seeking to employ and train a craft apprentice as a Toolmaker. You will receive broad-based training covering many aspects of Aerospace Manufacture, specialising as a craft apprentice. You can become a Toolmaker.
Job role will include:
Understand mathematical techniques, formula and calculation in a toolmaking environment.
Understand structure, properties and characteristics of common materials used for the manufacture and repair of tooling, moulds, dies, jigs and fixtures.
Understand the safe operation, correct selection and the application of a range of hand tools used for toolmaking and die maintenance, including grinders, drills, stones etc.
Understand the safe operation and operating principles of a range of complex and often state-of-the-art workshop machinery (such as CNC lathes, milling, grinding and erosion machining centres, drilling and welding equipment).
Understand how to set up and operate the machinery/equipment efficiently and effectively.
Understand the principles of how the relevant tools, dies, jigs and fixtures being manufactured/maintained function, the operating sequences, the purpose of the individual components/systems and how they interact.

During 2025 Plessey is offering two Level 4 Higher apprenticeship against the Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician standard.The academic element will be hosted by The Plymouth Engineering Skills Centre on a day release basis (1 day per week).
The apprenticeship consists of the HNC qualification and provides the opportunity to build the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) specified in the Level 4 Engineering Technician Standard. There is a minimum of 42 month before the KSBs are externally assessed during the Apprenticeship end-point assessment (EPA).
During your apprenticeship, you will build a portfolio of evidence to support you during the assessment process. You will receive guidance and supervision from The Plymouth Engineering Skills Centre and Plessey, who will support you every step of the way.
During the apprenticeship, you will be an employee of Plessey and will work alongside our engineers, undertaking on the job training.
As an apprentice:
You will be learning about the availability and performance of complex manufacturing systems

As part of your training, you will attend GLP Training Centre's in Worcester every 3 months for 2-3 days. All travel expenses and accommodation will be covered for you to attend this training.

As a Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician, you’ll study for a Level 4 apprenticeship with Stoke College
You will be required to attend the college on a block release, Monday lunchtime to Friday lunchtime
There will be approximately 10 blocks per year
Training Outcome:
On completion of your apprenticeship, you will become a qualified maintenance field engineer working alongside established colleagues in your respective geographic patches

The four-year programme is designed to enable you to experience different aspects of engineering and production technology including robotics, controls systems, machining, fluid power, electronics, welding and many more.
The first year of the program is purely in a learning environment where in addition to starting the academic requirements of your program, you will undertake a practical based engineering program which covers core engineering skills such as milling and turning, electrical and electronic circuits and control and fluid power, PLC’s etc
In the second and third year you will continue with the academic requirements of the program alongside on-the-job training. Your on-the-job training will comprise of placements in a number of different areas of the business, with particular focus on the maintenance departments and may also involve placements at other BMW UK sites. If at the end of your second year you meet your targeted grades you will have the opportunity to continue your fully funded academic training beyond Level 3 onto an HNC in Engineering
In your fourth year your on-the-job training will continue and will become more targeted to your final job role and where the job requires it you will start working a shift pattern to help better integrate you with your team

This means providers and employers need to work together to plan learning activities outside of the apprentice's normal working duties

The role of a Planning & Design Trainee involves detailed technical discussions with customers, architects, public authorities and landowners together with a sound and pragmatic appreciation of complex engineering problems. Applicants must be personable and approachable, with a firm understanding of engineering and financial matters.
The training programme provides on-the-job training and formal courses held in one of our Training Centres at either Taunton or Tipton, over a period of approximately two years (depending on entry level qualifications). Successful candidates will also be expected to study for and achieve a higher-level qualification. The majority of the on-the-job training will take place within local teams, but you may be required to undertake placements at other locations across the National Grid service area, so you need to be flexible and able to travel.
The apprenticeship programme takes approximately three years to complete, and you’ll spend your first 10-12 weeks being inducted onto the programme at one of our Training Centres. You’ll earn while you learn and develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours to become a Networks Planner, achieving a higher-level qualification. will include vocational and academic courses along with periods of on-the-job training and development, learning from an experienced and qualified Network Planner. Following a formal assessment of your knowledge, skills and behaviours, you’ll become a qualified Network Planner yourself.
As you will be studying for a higher-level qualification, you will be required to undertake placements with your training provider for up to two weeks at a time during the first two years. Accommodation and travel costs will be provided.
