These include medical and surgical patients, trauma of varying severity, children, gynaecological emergencies, mental health problems and minor illness or injury.The department treats 19,000 patients per annum and acts as the single point of assessment for all acute hospital admissions and referrals from the islands of Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm, with demand increasing during the holiday season.There is a regular need to assess patients referred by GPs to the on call in-patient specialists from the MSG. These patients are sent to the ED for assessment, where the department functions like an MAU/SAU.
