As our R&D Chemist, you will play a key role within R&D's technical ladder. This role requires an experienced level of technical knowledge and experience with the ability to utilize structure property relationships and design principles to execute efficient design of experiments. The R&D Chemist will demonstrate and apply the following skills to their work:
Good understanding of Scientific Methodology - uses hypothesis driven research and problem-solving capability using experimental design, data analysis and documentation Coating Chemistries: Intermediate knowledge of a range of coatings chemistries, focused primarily on waterborne acrylic chemistry, but also including alkyd, epoxy, urethane, etc. Coating Formulation Science: Various coating systems of architectural primers, basecoat, topcoat systems for liquid (waterborne) Coatings Application and Development: Application techniques, equipment, substrates coupled with good understanding of DIY and Contractor Coatings on various substrates such as drywall, metal, wood, concrete, plastic etc. Analytical science and material science emphasis on structure-property relationship

As an Apprentices Chemist to work toward:
Provide analytical data for process and product control to meet legal and quality assurance requirements; analysis of plant process samples, sample collection on plant, communication of sample results to plant/customers, basic equipment maintenance and performance checks to ensure accuracy of measurement.
Ensure all analytical work is carried out in accordance with operating procedures and quality standards
Prioritise and ensure the completion of a changing analytical workload in order to meet the demands of internal and external customers
Carry out, validate and report analyses for the site operations in order to prevent unsafe situations arising or incorrect data being passed to a third party, which has the potential for major impact on site operations or customers
Provide process chemistry and technical knowledge to advise the production areas in the interpretation of laboratory data
Initiate and carry out troubleshooting, repair and calibration of a wide range of technical equipment, within the central laboratory and plant laboratories to ensure a reliable service
Implement improvements to systems and measurement techniques to continually enhance the measurement resource of the businesses
Deal with and resolve queries on analytical results that may come from production areas or customers for their product to satisfy business requirements
Perform all work to required safety standards to prevent accidents and personal injury
Report and action non-conformances/deficiencies in systems of work or in the workplace to improve effectiveness of the laboratory
Training:Laboratory Technician Level 3.Training Outcome:The specific job opportunities with CF will be dependent on the business requirements on completion of the apprenticeship. Provide a focal point between KCPP and Tremco related to the QC/QA of the product line. Provide communication and facilitation between both companies when/if any R&D activities are needed. Be a conduit for comms between labs at KCPP and Tremco (directly linked with Cindy and Mike and teams). Perform QC/QA on KCPP products Provide assistance to Operations/Eng/Log for KCPP product line support. Work with Tremco to optimize supply chain, manufacturing schedule, overall provide guidance on when best to produce KCPP product line Provide after hours support when needed on KCPP product line. Perform calibrations on lab machinery for KCPP product line. Generate standards for lab machinery for KCPP product line. Support Tremco QC/QA for any needs in a prioritized fashion dependent upon management (QC Sup and Lab Mgr) guidance. This should include any after hours support when/if needed to support business needs and priorities. There could be some travel with this role to the KCPP lab from time to time. With guidance from research management or more senior professionals, plans and conducts experimental programs to complete a phase of a project or several projects of minor scope. • Conducts research on and testing of improvement of existing products, development of new products and technology and may include routine to complex synthesis or testing. Assignment may be a phase of a major project or a total project of minor scope. • With minimal supervision from more experienced professionals, they conduct routine synthesis or testing which provide experience and familiarization with methods, practices, and programs (analytical, performance, physical properties, etc.). • Under the guidance of more senior professionals or research management, they acquire knowledge of Tremco's products, procedures, and applications. • Interfaces with section personnel in trouble-shooting problems with hardware, testing/synthesis equipment, product, and methods development. • May be responsible for timely calibration and maintenance of the various laboratories and equipment and documentation according to the company's business processes. • With minimal guidance, conducts literature searches and gathers pertinent information related to specific topics. • Under minimal supervision, compile, analyze and correlate technical data and write timely reports on projects completed or progress reports. Writes procedures in accordance with the company's business practices. • Works with research management to formulate goals aligned with the executive leadership's initiatives and for professional growth. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (special skills, knowledge, ability, education, etc.): • Requires a B.S. in Chemistry or related technical field or can be progressed from Assist Chemist (performance-based and tested) • Effective communication (oral and written) skills. • Proficiency in computer programs is necessary for writing reports and performing mathematical calculations. • Knowledge of specialized scientific programs for molecular structure drawing, experimental design and statistics is a plus
Wages: Between $38 to $45 per hour, depending on experience and education
This position is 12.5% bonus eligible.
