We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Locum Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to work on the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit based at the Community Hospital in Redruth, Cornwall. This role involves working closely with individuals who have experienced a stroke, providing specialist therapy and support to aid their recovery and enhance their communication and swallowing abilities. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to ensure holistic care and optimal outcomes for stroke patients.
Key Responsibilities
Assess and manage individuals with speech, language, and swallowing difficulties following a stroke.
Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on comprehensive assessments of patients’ needs.
Provide therapy for communication disorders (aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia) and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).
Work alongside other professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and doctors, to deliver integrated care for stroke patients.
Support patients and their families with education and advice on managing speech, language, and swallowing issues.
Regularly review and monitor patient progress, adjusting care plans as required.
Document patient progress and therapy outcomes in accordance with trust policies and guidelines.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case reviews, and provide clinical supervision when necessary.
Promote a positive environment for patients, encouraging recovery and improving quality of life.
Contribute to audits, service improvements, and staff training as required.
Requirements:
HCPC Registered Speech and Language Therapist.
Proven experience in assessing and treating individuals with speech, language, and swallowing difficulties, particularly in a stroke rehabilitation setting.
Knowledge of evidence-based therapy techniques for stroke patients, including dysphagia and communication therapy.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
Experience in creating and delivering personalized care plans.
Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain one).
Ability to work autonomously, with supervision and support as needed.
Desirable
Experience of working in a stroke rehabilitation unit or neurological setting.
Post-graduate qualifications or specialist training in dysphagia or stroke rehabilitation.
Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD).
