The apprenticeship is held in partnership with Bath College at the Radstock Somer Valley Campus. The apprentice will be expected to attend college in person for part of their working week, and attend work at Locksbrook the days you are not at college.
Through a combination of classroom and work based learning over 4 years, the Maintenance Apprentice will gain knowledge of a broad range of activities which may include installation, testing, fault finding, rectification, modifications and the on-going planned maintenance of complex automated equipment, under the supervision and guidance of senior staff.
Duties will include:
Perform preventive and reactive maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems
Diagnose faults and implement corrective actions to ensure equipment efficiency
Assist with the calibration and testing of mechatronic systems to maintain high-performance standards
Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities using digital tools
Work closely with engineers, technicians, and team leaders to support production goals
Undertake general day to day maintenance activities
Maintain a high standard of 5S
Read and understand electrical, mechanical and fluid drawings
Ensure company policies and procedures are adhered to at all times
Ensure compliance with all relevant Environmental, Health & Safety and regulatory legislation
Actively support continuous improvement activities throughout the business

The Role of Facilities Maintenance Engineer:

- Service of ballcocks, tap washers and shower mixers.
- Carry out repairs to building fabrics including some decorating and carpentry.
- You will input relevant data following PPM actions into the planning record system to ensure accurate records are maintained.
- To carry out or coordinate any minor alterations (e.g. refurbishment, redecoration) to the building as and when required.
- Ensure stock levels of engineering items and consumables are kept at a satisfactory level.
Key Requirements - Facilities Maintenance Engineer:
- Must hold an apprenticeship or qualification in Building Services such as Mechanical, Plumbing, HVAC or similar
- Must have a minimum of 1 years of experience within a Building Services or facilities maintenance position within a healthcare environment
- Full UK Driving Licence and access to own vehicle is essential
- Be a great communicator with a strong work ethic.
- Able to work as part of a team and also independently to ensure tasks are completed.

In house the apprentice will spend a month each with the maintenance engineers in the Heavy Forge, Machine Shop and Die-Plant. After that they will have 4 weeks working within each department on the operations team, so they get a good working knowledge of how each machine should operate. Example 4 weeks in the Heavy Forge with the operators understanding how 9 Press should operate. They will then spend 5 months with the Maintenance Engineers in the Heavy Forge learning how to service and repair the equipment within that department. Then the same in the Machine Shop and the Die-Plant. A month will be spent in the Test House, the estimating department, the quality department and the production control department
At the end of this, the apprentice should have a good working knowledge of Somers Forge from a customer enquire through production, inspection and despatch to the customer
The first 2 years will be general maintenance engineering with the second 2 years being either HNC or HND

Training:Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located in Worcester (WR4 9GN):
Duration approximately 40-45 months.
Years 1/2 is a combination of off the job training at HWGTA Training Centre as well as training on site with your employer. This includes 29-42 weeks within the training centre plus 1 day per week in a classroom setting to cover practical and theory aspects and complete EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Development Knowledge

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB: The Maintenance Technician supports and ensures the completion of day-to-day maintenance activities at the plant. The position provides support to leadership for all maintenance staff to drive excellence and maximize effort. The position focuses on maintaining high-quality standards through the efforts expended at the facility that meet and exceed customer expectations while maintaining a professional and equally efficient environment for all production employees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform standard work in a safe manner by following all written and verbally communicated safety rules and procedures. Inspect and repair plant equipment, including but not limited to mechanical, welding, carpentry, electrical, instrumentation and controls to minimize downtime. Document accurate maintenance activity records. Clean and maintain assigned areas and tools to ensure proper functionality. Participate in the continuous improvement process. Report incidents, near misses, and any non-conformances through the appropriate channels. Exemplify the expected values of organization including following policies and standard work procedures. Give input on and coordinate maintenance supply purchases. Perform Preventative Maintenance Program to ensure completion and accuracy. Other projects and tasks as assigned. Crosstrain on other production functions to aid as business need dictates.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
High school diploma required; One-year certificate from college, technical school or manufacturing training program preferred.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
One to two years related experience and/or training
