Role responsibilities will include:
Prepare composite materials including GRP and FRP laminates, resins, and fibreglass in line with production schedules and quality specifications
Operate hand lay-up and spray-up moulding processes under the supervision of senior technicians, developing proficiency in a range of composite manufacturing techniques
Assist in the fabrication, trimming, and finishing of composite components such as tanks, bunds, enclosures, anti-slip systems, and architectural mouldings
Support site installation activities including the application of protective linings and coatings to industrial structures such as storage tanks, bund walls, and cooling towers
Carry out surface preparation tasks including abrasive blasting and cleaning of substrates prior to lining or coating application, following COSHH and PPE requirements at all times
Conduct quality checks on finished components, identifying and reporting defects or non-conformances to the Production Manager
Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment, adhering to all health & safety protocols, site-specific safety procedures, and SGI Composites’ company standards
Complete all apprenticeship off-the-job learning requirements and portfolio evidence as required by the apprenticeship standard
Support the team across multiple product lines including spill containment, enclosures, furniture and planters, and anti-slip grating as business needs require
Participate in continuous improvement activities and contribute ideas to enhance production quality and efficiency
Training:
The apprentice will be working towards the Level 3 Composites Technician Apprenticeship Standard
This is a 3 year apprenticeship with college attendance required one day per week
All college attendance will be at Colchester Institute at our Colchester Campus one day per week
Training Outcome:SGI Composites has a strong track record of developing apprentices into long-term team members. Several current senior staff – including the Operations Manager, Production Manager, and Technical Specialist – started their careers as trainees with the business.

You will study towards a Construction Design and Build Technician Level 4 Apprenticeship, typically achieving an HNC or equivalent Level 4 qualification.
With the support of experienced designers and technical managers, you’ll:
Support the production and coordination of design and technical information
Assist with preparing and reviewing drawings, schedules and specifications

Support coordination between architectural, structural and building services design

Working alongside and assisting experienced engineers

Liaise with the Laboratory, Design and Drawing Offices in day to day duties
This would include involvement in design and redesign of products.
To provide technical support for manufacturing (New product introductions, First Offs & ensure BOMs are correct)
Deal with the product complaints and site rectification work, with site visits where necessary
Liaise with suppliers on technical matters
To carry out quarterly reviews on prices of electronic components and assist the Technical Manager/Technical Operations Supervisor in the specification of electronic components
Introduce new systems to refine the day-to-day duties within different departments
Suggest improvements within the company, process improvement etc.
Help out to see-through large-scale projects. For example, introducing new machinery
Aid manufacturing with jigs and fixtures when required
Help out with health and safety suggest improvements, complete necessary COSHH sheets
Aid with quality assurance
Training:Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located at Mc Kenzie Way, Worcester WR4 9GN.

Duration approximately 40-45 months:
Year 1:
between 22–39 weeks are spent at HWGTA Training Centre developing practical engineering skills, alongside one day per week in the classroom, completing the theoretical elements of the EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering
Year 2:
Predominantly based in your company, returning to the Training Centre one day per week to continue and complete the specialised elements of their Level 3 Diploma (Development Knowledge)
Years 3 - 4:
Based full-time in your company, developing practical skills and knowledge in preparation for the End Point Assessment to gain your Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician Level 3 qualification
